专家简介:

Prof. Dr. Martin Weissmann has been the head of Data Assimilation Branch, Hans-Ertel Centre for Weather Research at the University of Munich in Germany until 2019 and the head of department of meteorology and geophysics at University of Vienna in Austria between 2020 and 2022. He is currently the member of the ESA Aeolus Science and data quality Advisory Group, the coordinator of the project Experimental Validation and Assimilation of Aeolus Observations (EVAA) and the lead organizer of International Symposium on Data Assimilation. His research interests cover atmospheric data assimilation, error modelling, wind lidars and Aeolus satellite.

报告摘要:

The ESA Aeolus wind lidar satellite launched in 2018 filled a long-lasting gap in the global observing system by providing vertical profiles of wind observations with a global coverage. We investigated the impact of wind profiles from the Aeolus satellite in the global NWP system of Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). The Aeolus observations led to a reduction of forecast errors of zonal wind, temperature and geopotential up to five days lead time of 2 - 4%, with the largest reduction in the tropical upper troposphere and stratosphere as well as in the mid- and upper troposphere of the Southern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere shows a smaller but still clearly beneficial impact. Overall, Aeolus has a remarkable impact on the forecast skill of global NWP and this large impact of a single satellite instrument is linked to two key features of atmospheric dynamics that are largely unobserved by other systems: Vertical wind shear in the tropics that is crucial for vertical wave propagation and upper-tropospheric divergence in the extratropics.
